About this blog, "The Honorable Heather Mizeur"

I am a policy nerd. I practice my genius when finding meaningful solutions to intractable challenges and using public policy as a tool for catalytic change. Serving as an appointed and elected official at the municipal, state, and federal levels has allowed me to hone my political craft. As a senior staff member in Congress for more than a decade, during a stint as a local City Councilmember, and as a successful Maryland state legislator for eight years, I had an incredible opportunity to lead and shape the conversation and contours of policies and laws impacting our health, environment, civil rights, and economic justice.  

Love is my calling. Democracy is my love language. Humans are messy but we are also divine. When we are at our best, we are able to come together in the spirit of democracy: putting our soul’s force for goodness to work for the benefit of all. But “We, The People” live in challenging and politically divisive times. 

That’s why I founded and lead the #WeAreOne Alliance, a non-profit organization focused on bridging the polarization that is our greatest national security threat. We teach best practices for living a more authentic and connected life, helping to heal our cultural divides by awakening the heart’s wisdom for honorable civic engagement rooted in compassion, non-judgement, and belonging. Our best defense of democracy is to love humanity.  

Politics and elected office gave me the title of “The Honorable.” Integrity and love of neighbor made me worthy of it. I often spend time contemplating and writing about issues, observations, and practices that help us cultivate a deeper awareness of self and others, bringing us closer to our honorable hearts.
